Profile
RailCorp is a state owned corporation of the New South Wales Government. The organisation aims for safe, clean and reliable passenger services, operating under two brands, CityRail and CountryLink.
CityRail is the principal passenger transport operator in Sydney and the surrounding region, operating suburban, intercity and regional train services. The CityRail network carries approximately 800,000 passengers daily across the Sydney, Hunter, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Illawarra and South Coast areas.
CityRail services a network of just over 300 stations with a fleet of 1578 carriages. Double-deck electric trains service most of the CityRail network, while 30 Endeavour diesel railcars provide most services in the non-electrified regional areas of Hunter Valley, South Coast and Southern Highlands.
CountryLink operates long distance passenger train and coach services to more than 350 destinations in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Victoria. The CountryLink fleet is made up of XPT's and XPLORER's.
Structure
RailCorp was formed on 1 January 2004 after merging the metropolitan functions of the Rail Infrastructure Corporation and former State Rail Authority of NSW.
The merger marked the start of a new era for passenger rail services in NSW. Part of the wide-ranging reform of the NSW public transport sector, the establishment of RailCorp was aimed at delivering a single point of accountability across the railways.
The organisation is split into nine groups (departments). Groups that relate to front line operations include Train Services, Customer Services and Infrastructure. While business support groups include Corporate Counsel, Finance, Human Resources, Safety and Environment, Communications and Strategy.
