Competition in the telecommunications industry in Australia did not exist prior to the issuing of a second carriers' license in 1992 by the Federal Government. Full deregulation of the assignment followed in July 1997.
Primus Telecom, one of Australia's largest telecommunications carrier, is one of the Competitive New Carriers (CNC's) that entered the Australian market and is rapidly defining the standards in service excellence in the industry.
Our History
Since full deregulation, Primus has captured a record portion of market share for a CNC. Primus has made a commitment to Australian businesses and consumers to deliver unsurpassed quality and service in telecommunications and Internet services. Primus is not only Australia's fourth largest fixed-line carrier, it is Australia's only global telecommunications company.
Primus first began operating in Australia following its acquisition of Australian-based telecommunications reseller Axicorp. The acquisition of Axicorp allowed Primus to obtain its carrier's license and begin operating in Australia as a fully-fledged carrier on July 1, 1997.
Primus was formed in 1993 by a group of highly successful senior MCI executives who committed themselves to establishing a major global telecommunications carrier. Primus is a global facilitiesbased total solutions provider offering long distance and international, voice, data, Internet, private networks and value added services.
The company uses an extensive global network of owned and leased transmission facilities. It has ownership interests in around 40 undersea fibre optic cable systems, 23 international gateway switches, a satellite earth station and a variety of operating relationships that allow it to deliver traffic worldwide.
Primus has been growing solidly every year and is now one of the top 100 telecommunications network operators in the world (including all incumbent national carriers reporting revenue). We are currently ranked 86th in revenue in the Sept 2001 CommunicationsWeek International survey.

Primus will continue to focus on enhancing stockholder value by expanding our customer base, shifting our worldwide customer mix to add more business customers, balancing the revenue base between our service regions; providing new service offerings; expanding our intelligent global network; and increasing our gross margin percentages.
